Lymphatic Services
Lymphatic massage therapy is great for well-being and as part of a detox program. The treatment stimulates the lymphatic flow and increases the removal of excess fluid and waste products. It also helps to regulate the nervous system and so is very relaxing which in turn can have a positive impact on other systems of the body.
You may choose to have this as a “one-off” treatment or regularly for general well-being.
MLD & Surgery
Surgery of any kind creates trauma to the body. Trauma causes inflammation as the body sends its workforce to protect and heal the area. The lymphatic system will fight infection, reduce swelling, and remove waste products and toxins, promoting healing.
Depending on your surgery the lymphatic flow can be interrupted, and this will have an additional impact on the system with possible complications of fibrosis and seromas.
Surgeries include liposuction, abdominoplasty, and breast augmentation. You may have had one or multiple surgeries at the same time and receiving lymphatic massage treatments can help speed healing and recovery by promoting the removal of excess fluid, and waste products and stimulating the body’s healing response. As well as this it can help to reduce pain by releasing endorphins (the body’s natural pain reliever), help the skin to tighten, and reduce swelling/inflammation.
it is recommended that you have 1 or 2 sessions in the week leading up to the surgery and then begin again as soon as possible following the surgery.
If you have been advised to wear any compression garments then these need to be correctly fitting and so depending on your surgery they may need to be replaced with a different size as your swelling reduces.
MLD & Lipoedema
Lipoedema is a condition mainly affecting women and can start during a time of hormonal change, puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. Areas of the legs and arms become disproportionate in size to the rest of the body as fat tissue changes occur.
Manual lymphatic drainage massage may relieve symptoms associated with this such as tired, heavy legs, and swelling in the legs during the day that reduces overnight.
If you think you may be affected by lipoedema more information about this can be found on the talk lipoedema website www.talklipoedema.org.
MLD & Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a chronic condition where an accumulation of lymphatic fluid builds up (usually in the arms or legs) due to vessels or nodes being damaged or compromised, resulting in the lymphatic system being overwhelmed. This can be as a result of a trauma, surgical procedure, radiotherapy treatments, infection, or a congenital condition.
Manual lymphatic drainage can be used to help reduce lymphoedema symptoms by redirecting fluid toward functioning lymph vessels and nodes. It can also be used in combination with compression garments or bandaging, by helping to remove excess fluid from the area affected, this is known as DLT – Decongestive Lymphatic Therapy. DLT also includes maintaining a good skincare routine and light exercise to manage lymphoedema.
DLT is used to help improve lymphatic flow as well as reduce hard fibrotic tissue that may occur.
Compression garments should be correctly fitting and replaced every 4 – 6 months, for more information go to www.sigvaris.com.
Taping
Taping an area of the body which is swollen can help with the removal of excess fluid. Special tape is applied in specific ways depending on the area of the body affected by the swelling, the tape lifts the top layer of skin creating space in the underlying tissues allowing the lymphatic fluid to drain.
